Edge is a 501(c)(3) non-profit, charitable corporation that operates as a consortium of its member institutions.
Edge is a consortium of member institutions. We are a community of Higher Education, K-12, Healthcare, and Government institutions who work collaboratively to function as our own ISP. Edge also has vast secure connectivity to specific research and education resources not available through commercial Internet Service Providers.
As a 501(c)(3) non-profit, charitable corporation, Edge operates as a consortium for its member institutions. We are not part of New Jersey state government, but work cooperatively on many related initiatives.
Accredited public and private higher educational institutions, libraries, and research organizations along with institutions in the K-12, healthcare, municipal government, and non-profit sector are eligible to apply for membership. View the benefits of membership here!
Edge’s members include public and private higher education institutions, public libraries, healthcare organizations, local government, K-12 districts, and those who use our illumira digital asset management system. View our full list of members here!
The Board of Trustees is comprised of leaders from Edge member institutions. All higher education sectors are represented in the composition of the Board, which is modified in our corporate by-laws over time to stay consistent with membership.

Generally not. Edge’s rates and fees are approved by our Board of Trustees. Subject to review annually, our members determine the balance between cost and service, rates are established appropriately.
Should I expect additional fees on top of the quoted rates? Will I be billed exactly what you quote?
You will be billed exactly what you are quoted. Edge includes all fees in the costs provided on a quotation. Some services Edge purchases solely for the use of a single member may include fees that we have to recover. This may cause some invoices to vary slightly.
Currently, Edge accepts payment for services via check. To request an alternative method of payment please contact the Edge business office at 1.855.832.3343 to discuss options.
Edge services run on a fiscal year cycle running from July 1 through June 30 of each year.
Edge provides annual, quarterly, and monthly billing options. Our default billing method is quarterly. Upgrades and disconnects are invoiced or refunded during the billing period following the upgrade or disconnect. Other billing arrangements can be made to accommodate member institution’s needs.
All payments can be mailed to: Edge at
625 Broad St, Suite 260, Newark, NJ 07102
You can find detailed information on Edge’s technology solutions by visiting our Solutions Tab at www.archive.njedge.net/solutions. Edge also provides solutions based on member need and can often provide complete custom solutions. Yes, Edge can provide solutions for members with multiple campus locations. We provide multi-location solutions for a number of our members either as multiple standard connections, or as a virtual private network between campus locations with one “border” to the outside world.
We recommend that each member maintain a test port on their own edge router that permits trouble shooting outside the LAN.
Edge maintains its own speed test server (https://speedtest.njedge.net/) and recommends using it only for testing.
Members should be mindful of the following:
- The speedtest.njedge.net browser test application lists throughput in Layer3 values; however, circuits Edge procures also must carry Layer 1 and Layer 2 portions of the path. This additional overhead can result in tests showing 5-7% lower than the actual circuit speed.
- LAN traffic will contend equally with the speedtest.njedge.net traffic. If the LAN is currently generating traffic, it will subtract from the test results. Normal use must be accounted for when interpreting test results.
Edge provides both self serve and managed DNS change capability via our partner, DYN DNS. Generally speaking it could take up to 24 hours for changes to be visible across the Internet.
Edge can add PTR records for all members utilizing Edge’s address space (130.156.xxx.xxx). For members using Edge’s DNS service and their own address space, PTR records can be added via self-serve or by request by emailing email@example.com.
No, not at all. Edge does purchase specific services from the New Jersey telecommuncations industry as “building blocks” for our network, but we do not simply re-sell existing Internet services. Edge’s network and other solution offerings are very unique, purpose-built, and tailored to our members’ needs.
As part of EdgePro solutions, Edge is available to provide engineering and/or consulting services to membership. These services have varied widely, from selection of videoconferencing hardware to federating autonomous systems. Contact Edge at firstname.lastname@example.org or by calling 1.855.832.3343 to discuss your organization’s specific needs.
Yes, Edge provides graphs for all member institutions’ connections, as well as graphs of our backbone and upstream connections. Please see https://archive.njedge.net/solutions/edgenet/ for more information.
Edge hosts public-facing DNS for connected members free of charge. We can also slave your public DNS zones as well.
At this time Edge does offer a fully supported, general streaming service. Zoom Video Communications may be used for one-way Web-based “broadcasting”.
https://archive.njedge.net/solutions/edgemedia/ Edge has partnered with Zoom to provide statewide consortium pricing for a variety of their services through Edge. This service is also enhanced with superior quality and reliability when used over a Edge network connection, though connectivity to Edge is not required for using the service. Read more about our video communication services here.
You do not, but Edge strongly recommends a connection to our network for maximum quality and reliability — particularly if the service is relied upon for critical needs.
No. Zoom pricing is based on the subscriber’s Full Time Equivalent (FTE) for Faculty and Staff. Edge membership is required to subscribe to the service and receive preferred pricing.
Zoom is a more flexible, easy-to-use, and cost-effective “next generation” technology that can complement and/or replace existing video communication services/equipment.
No. The Zoom service and features are the same. Non-connected members do have a higher subscription cost to support the additional complications in troubleshooting problems for non-connected members.
You do not have to be a Edge connected member to subscribe to the service. Zoom technology is built to work over low bandwidth, high latency networks; however, quality, reliability and predictability are significantly higher when used over the Edge network.
Edge operates a statewide, private network for its members. Traffic passing between Edge members and selected in-state peers does not traverse the public Internet, but stays inside our domain. This routing provides an additional layer of security for our members, but is not a replacement for end-to-end encryption of sensitive data.
Edge does all that it can to ensure the privacy and integrity of your data, but should not be viewed as a replacement for member strategies for privacy. We recommend members use strong encryption on any sensitive data before uploading it to a cloud provider.
Better yet, Edge achieved status as a New Jersey Educational Services Consortium with Lead Agency Status for public procurement. Edge procures services on behalf of the membership using approved state of New Jersey procurement procedures.
