Can you provide a network testing port to bypass my LAN?

We recommend that each member maintain a test port on their own edge router that permits trouble shooting outside the LAN.

How can I speed test to make sure I’m getting the network speed I pay for?

Edge maintains its own speed test server (https://speedtest.njedge.net/) and recommends using it only for testing.
Members should be mindful of the following:

  • The speedtest.njedge.net browser test application lists throughput in Layer3 values; however, circuits Edge procures also must carry Layer 1 and Layer 2 portions of the path. This additional overhead can result in tests showing 5-7% lower than the actual circuit speed.
  • LAN traffic will contend equally with the speedtest.njedge.net traffic. If the LAN is currently generating traffic, it will subtract from the test results. Normal use must be accounted for when interpreting test results.

How long will it take for DNS changes to take effect?

Edge provides both self serve and managed DNS change capability via our partner, DYN DNS. Generally speaking it could take up to 24 hours for changes to be visible across the Internet.

Can you add a PTR (reverse DNS) record for me?

Edge can add PTR records for all members utilizing Edge’s address space (130.156.xxx.xxx). For members using Edge’s DNS service and their own address space, PTR records can be added via self-serve or by request by emailing dns@njedge.net.

A local provider told me Edge merely re-sells what they’re offering me. Is that true?

No, not at all. Edge does purchase specific services from the New Jersey telecommuncations industry as “building blocks” for our network, but we do not simply re-sell existing Internet services. Edge’s network and other solution offerings are very unique, purpose-built, and tailored to our members’ needs.

I see consulting services on your rate sheet. How do I purchase consulting services?

As part of EdgePro solutions, Edge is available to provide engineering and/or consulting services to membership. These services have varied widely, from selection of videoconferencing hardware to federating autonomous systems. Contact Edge at info@njedge.net or by calling 1.855.832.3343 to discuss your organization’s specific needs.

Does Edge offer a streaming service?

At this time Edge does offer a fully supported, general streaming service. Zoom Video Communications may be used for one-way Web-based “broadcasting”.

What Video Conference Services are available from Edge?

https://archive.njedge.net/solutions/edgemedia/ Edge has partnered with Zoom to provide statewide consortium pricing for a variety of their services through Edge. This service is also enhanced with superior quality and reliability when used over a Edge network connection, though connectivity to Edge is not required for using the service. Read more about our video communication services here.

Do I need a dedicated connection for video communication?

You do not, but Edge strongly recommends a connection to our network for maximum quality and reliability — particularly if the service is relied upon for critical needs.

Does Edge offer video room system support?

Yes, to request this support send an email to support@njedge.net.

Are Edge’s Zoom video communication services available for free to members?

No. Zoom pricing is based on the subscriber’s Full Time Equivalent (FTE) for Faculty and Staff. Edge membership is required to subscribe to the service and receive preferred pricing.

Why should my school use Zoom through Edge?

Zoom is a more flexible, easy-to-use, and cost-effective “next generation” technology that can complement and/or replace existing video communication services/equipment.

Is the Zoom video communication service different for connected members vs. non-connected members?

No. The Zoom service and features are the same. Non-connected members do have a higher subscription cost to support the additional complications in troubleshooting problems for non-connected members.

Do I need to have an Edge connection to use the Edge's Zoom Service?

You do not have to be a Edge connected member to subscribe to the service. Zoom technology is built to work over low bandwidth, high latency networks; however, quality, reliability and predictability are significantly higher when used over the Edge network.

How can I use Single-Sign-On with Zoom?

Edge can work with you to enable this. For more information on Zoom and SSO please see: https://support.zoom.us/

Is Edge Secure?

Edge operates a statewide, private network for its members. Traffic passing between Edge members and selected in-state peers does not traverse the public Internet, but stays inside our domain. This routing provides an additional layer of security for our members, but is not a replacement for end-to-end encryption of sensitive data.

Can Edge ensure the privacy of my stored data?

Edge does all that it can to ensure the privacy and integrity of your data, but should not be viewed as a replacement for member strategies for privacy. We recommend members use strong encryption on any sensitive data before uploading it to a cloud provider.

Better yet, Edge achieved status as a New Jersey Educational Services Consortium with Lead Agency Status for public procurement. Edge procures services on behalf of the membership using approved state of New Jersey procurement procedures.
